Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Looking to avoid the sweep at the hands of Long Beach, the Victoria Seals played their first Sunday matinee at Royal Athletic Park. Up against Jamie Arneson (0-0) of the Armada, the Seals sent Travis Wade (0-1) to the mound.
Taking advantage of a struggling Long Beach pitcher, the Seals loaded the bases on three straight walks in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single from Josh Arhart opened the scoring for Victoria just moments later, giving the home side a 1-0 lead.
The Seals would extend their lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run from first baseman Kyle Nichols. The slugger's first blast of the season crossed Pembroke Street for the Seals' third home run in as many games.
With Chris Bodishbaugh stepping in to replace an injured Travis Wade in the fourth frame, the Armada cut the Victoria lead in half. A lead-off single from Omar Bramasco eventually scored on a fielder's choice from Matt Edgecombe, who later scored on a single from Jonny Kaplan.
The Seals would answer right back in the bottom of the fifth, when back-to-back walks to Jamar Hill and Sergio Pedroza were cashed on a three run bomb from Josh Arhart. The long ball off of Long Beach pitcher Juan Jimenez gave Victoria a 7-2 lead.
Refusing to go away quietly, the Armada collected another pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a double from Daryl Jones. A lead-off double from Matt Kavanaugh, however, later scored to give Victoria a 9-4 advantage through six innings of work.
Another response from the Armada in the seventh inning chased Ezequiel Ruvalcaba from the game when Long Beach scored two more runs before Mike Reeves closed out the inning. With the score 9-6 in the top of the ninth, Javier Garcia picked up a pair of strikeouts to hand the Seals their first ever win at Royal Athletic Park.
Chris Bodishbaugh collects his first win of the year while Jamie Arneson falls to 0-2 with the loss. The Seals offence was bolstered by Josh Arhart, who finished 2-for-4 while picking up four RBI's in the process. Daryl Jones was also 2-for-4 and notched two RBI's in a losing effort for Long Beach.
