Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Opening their first-ever series at Foothills Stadium, the Victoria Seals took to the field against the Calgary Vipers on Monday night. It was the season debut for both starting pitchers, as Erik Dessau (0-0) was on the mound for Calgary against Roberto Sotolongo (0-0) for the Seals.

For the fourth time in five games, Victoria would surrender the night's opening run. A double from lead-off batter Fehlandt Lentini would score on a sacrifice fly from Nelson Castro. Just 13 pitches into the ballgame, Sotolongo would slip during a throw to home plate and could not continue, leaving the game with a strained left knee. Coming out of the bullpen to take his place, Chris Bodishbaugh made his second appearance of the young season. The frame's second double, this time from catcher Rick Guarno, would score Castro and put the Vipers up 2-0 after one.

A scoreless second inning would cue up more offence from Calgary in the bottom of the third. A solo home run from Castro, plus single by Jorge Mejia, followed up by a two run blast from Carlos Duncan put three more on the board for the Vipers. Still in the third, Mark Okano struck for a double off the wall, and both Ivan Reyes and Colin Moro picked up an RBI to put Calgary up 7-0 through three innings of work.

Medicine Hat native Drew Miller extended the Vipers' lead in the fourth inning, notching his league-leading third homer of the season, to make the score 10-0 Calgary.

With the skies beginning to open up at Foothills Stadium, Sergio Pedroza collected the first home run in Victoria Seals history, taking an offering from Dessau over the right field fence for a three-run long ball. Before the game was called, however, Lentini launched his third home run of the season and the Viper's fourth of the game over the fence in left-centre field to restore Calgary's 10-run lead.

With the lightning striking, wind gusting and rain pouring in Calgary, the game was called off due to unplayable field conditions with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. According to Golden Baseball League rules, the Calgary batters who appeared in the bottom of the fifth do go into the record book, leaving the final score as 13-3 Vipers over the Seals.

Calgary's Erik Dessau picks up his first win of the season to improve to 1-0, while Chris Bodishbaugh falls to 0-1 on the year with the loss. Carlos Duncan led the way for Calgary, finishing 2-for-2 with a home run, three RBI's, and two runs scored. Drew Miller went 2-for-3 with another three RBI's. Victoria's offensive highlight on the night came from Sergio Pedroza, who finished at 2-for-2 with a home run for three RBI's.
