Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - For the second night in a row the Victoria Seals squared off against the Edmonton Capitals at Telus Field. On another beautiful night for baseball, Victoria turned to former Expo's first-round pick Josh Karp (0-0), making his first start in four years on the mound. Edmonton, meanwhile, went with Justin Jordan (0-0) to start the game.
Once again it would be the Capitals who opened the score in game two of the four game series, as Marcus Nettles scored on a ground ball from Darryl Brinkley after leading off with a triple to right field. Edmonton would extend their lead in the second inning, using back-to-back solo home runs from Joe Jianetti and Jorge Cortes to grab a 3-0 lead through two.
Back to back doubles in the top of the third opened the scoring for the Seals, as Bret LeVier and Wilver Perez would both cash to bring Victoria within one. After the Capitals stretched their lead to 5-2, the Seals would capitalize on a pair of Edmonton errors to score three runs in the fifth inning at knot the game at 5-5. With the score even, both teams turned to the bullpen and Ezequiel Ruvalcaba took to the mound against Paige Dumont of the Capitals.
Getting to Ruvalcaba early, Edmonton would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a pair to move out front 7-5. The pesky Seals would answer again in the top of the sixth, however, as Bret LeVier would register his second hit and second run on the night to bring Victoria within one.
In the bottom of the seventh inning the Capitals would open the game up. After loading the bases, designated hitter Norm Hutchins crushed a triple to the right field wall, clearing the bases and handing Edmonton a 12-6 lead. Seals manager Darrell Evans would turn to Victoria native Graham Campbell to close out both the inning and the game.
The Seals would respond in the very next inning to keep the pressure on. The night's second bases-loaded triple, this time from Victoria's Wilver Perez, would draw the Seals within two runs of Edmonton, and the game went into the ninth 12-10.
In the final frame, Edmonton turned to closer Hector Almonte to close out the game. After allowing five runs in the ninth inning of game one, Almonte took down the Seals in order to clinch the victory. Four hours after the game began, the Capitals took their second straight win over Victoria, a 12-10 final.
Paige Dumont is credited with his first win of the season to move to 1-0 for the Capitals, while Ezequiel Ruvalcaba moves to to 0-1 on the year with the loss.
