Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Wrapping up a four-game series against the Tucson Toros with a double-header Sunday afternoon, the Victoria Seals returned to Royal Athletic Park still in search of their first win against Tucson this season. Sending Andrew Arreola (5-6) to the mound for the start in game three, Victoria squared off against former Seal James Garcia (4-4) in the first game of the day.

Jumping out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the third, the Toros opened the scoring when Ron Perodin notched a lead-off single, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error to Victoria catcher Matt Kavanaugh and later scored on an RBI single from Lino Garcia.

Responding to even the score in the bottom of the fourth, the Seals tied the game 1-1 with the help of a solo home run from Tim Rodriguez. Tucson would restore their lead in the top half of the fifth, though, using a two-run shot from Garcia to pull ahead 3-1.

After Terrence McClain hit a solo home run in the bottom of inning five, the Seals rallied to tie the game again when Rodriguez powered his second home run of the afternoon over the left-field fence to even the score at 3-3. Despite putting two runners on in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings Victoria failed to claim a walk-off win until the second extra inning.

Wilver Perez led off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit, then promptly tied the Golden Baseball League single-season stolen base record with his 51st of the season before Brian Rios ripped a walk-off single down the third base line to secure a 4-3 Seals victory.

The fifth Victoria pitcher of the game, Jason Kershner, picked up the win with just two pitches on the day, while Tucson closer Emiliano Fruto took the loss. Tim Rodriguez' first two home runs as a Seal led the way for Victoria while Lino Garcia finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI's in a losing effort for the Toros.

Turning around to complete the series with game number four a half-hour later, the Seals looked to win back-to-back games with red-hot Jino Gonzalez (5-4) on the mound to face off against the Toros' Vince Davis (3-6).

Finding their first two-run lead of the series in the bottom of the first, the Seals jumped on the board when Wilver Perez led off the frame with a double before a sacrifice fly from Brian Rios made it 1-0 and an RBI double courtesy of Matt Kavanaugh put the Seals ahead by a pair.

With Gonzalez cruising on the hill, Victoria extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth. After Kavanaugh drew a base on balls, Moro hit another double and Edgecombe loaded the bases with a walk, a single from Jerry Madueno cashed in one before Perez knocked in two more with a base hit into right-centrefield.

The Toros bounced back to give the Seals a scare in the top of the seventh inning, though, drawing within two with the help of back-to-back solo home runs from Jose Valdez and pinch-hitter Darren Blakely along with a single from Josh Womack that eventually cashed on an RBI groundout from Ryan Priddy.

Victoria recovered to induce the game-ending ground ball one batter later to polish off a quick 5-3 win in the second leg of the double-header matchup, splitting the series against Tucson and climbing back above .500 in the second half.

Jino Gonzalez posted 10 strikeouts en route to his sixth consecutive win, while Vince Davis took the loss for the Toros. Despite not breaking the stolen base record in game four, Wilver Perez still paced the Seals offensively with a 2-for-3 outing while lead-off batter Josh Womack also had two hits for Tucson.
