Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors firstbaseman Vic Davilla was named the Daktronics player of the year in the Northeast League, league officials announced today.

The thirty-year-old Davilla was in the top three in the league in ten different offensive categories. He led the league in RBI (74), total bases (199), on-base percentage (.419), and slugging percentage (.601). He finished second in the league in batting (.338), runs scored (58), hits (112), and home runs (20). He was third in the league in walks (42) and extra base hits (46). Davilla narrowly missed the triple crown, finishing three batting points behind Dennis Abreu in the batting race and one home run behind Carlos Rodriguez for the home run title. In Davilla's last at-bat of the season in Quebec, he would have tied Abreu and Rodriguez and won the triple crown if he hit a home run. Davilla came up about five feet short, flying out to the wall in right-center field.

"It's nice to be acknowledged," Davilla said. "I'd give it all up to go to the playoffs, but once you're on the field you can only control what you can do, not the other nine or ten players."

As far as missing the triple crown, coming as close as he did made it tougher to swallow. "Missing it the way I did was a little disappointing, but there's always next year," Davilla said. "Towards the end of the season it was fun trying for it. With us out of the picture it was nice to have something to shoot for."

The award is Davilla's first since joining the Northeast League in 1997. It was voted on by the team managers and media. He also set a new career home run record in the league with 72, breaking the old mark of 70 held by Jon Mueller.
