Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ, September 4-The Newark Bears announced today that former New Jersey Devils defenseman Ken Daneyko will sign a one-day contract with the club and will be in uniform on Saturday September the 13th when the Bears face the Pennsylvania Road Warriors beginning at 6:05 PM at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Daneyko, who retired in July after eighteen seasons in the National Hockey League and three Stanley Cup Championships, was originally set to be saluted by the Bears in a pre-game ceremony on the 13th, but after a series of impressive batting practice sessions it was decided that Daneyko would be eligible to play for Newark that night, as well.

"It's up to our manager, Bill Madlock, how, or if, Ken Daneyko will be used in the game," explained Bears Vice-President and General Manager Chris Bryan. "We are just excited to provide this special opportunity to one of New Jersey's most popular athletes."

The team also announced today that the gates at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium will open at 4:00 PM on September 13th so that fans can watch Daneyko take batting practice with the Bears. Following batting practice, Daneyko will be available for autographs and then will take part in a pre-game ceremony honoring his career, which includes his throwing out of the first pitch.

"It's going to be exciting to put on a Bears uniform," said Daneyko. "Being such a big baseball fan, I am well-acquainted with Bill Madlock's Major League career and am honored to have the chance to meet him and be a part of his team, even if it's just for one day."

Tickets for the September 13th game, which also features Hispanic Heritage Night and a post-game fireworks extravaganza sponsored by Shop Rite, are available at the Bears box office, online at www.NewarkBears.com or by calling (973) 483-6900. Fans wearing New Jersey Devils clothing will receive $1.00 off admission the day of the game.
