NEWARK, NJ, September 4-The Somerset Patriots handed the Newark Bears their ninth shutout loss of the season, defeating the Bears, 10-0, Thursday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win Somerset remains 1.5 games behind the Camden Riversharks, who also won this evening, for first place in the south division with ten games remaining in the season.
Former New York Yankees right-hander Brett Jodie (11-5) shut down the Bears offense, allowing only three hits over eight innings of work. Jodie, who has won five of his last six starts, allowed singles to Wil Quintana in the fourth inning, Paul Esposito in the seventh and Eddy Martinez in the eighth. He finished with three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Somerset roughed up Bears starter Calvin Maduro (1-10), plating eight runs on eight hits off of the former big league right-hander in 3.1 innings. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich led the Patriots with a home run, his 18th of the season, a triple and four funs-batted-in in his five at-bats. Second baseman Emiliano Escandon added four hits and an RBI while Edgard Clemente had two hits and two RBI.
Right-hander Tommy Parks, the former New York Jets punter, made his Bears debut in relief and tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, allowing only one hit and one walk.
The Bears will open a three-game weekend series against the Long Island Ducks Friday night with Jim Bullinger (0-4) starting for Newark.
