
Veteran reliever Pedro Borbon joins Trappers

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trappers Baseball Club announced today that left-handed pitcher Pedro Borbon has been transferred to the club from Short-Season Single-A Vermont. Borbon was signed as a free agent by the Montreal Expos on May 11 and assigned to the Vermont roster. In addition the Trappers also announced that right-handed pitcher Roy Corcoran has been activated from the seven-day disabled list and right-handed pitcher Chris Schroder has been transferred to Double-A Harrisburg. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders and three outfielders, plus two players (right-hander Seung Song and infielder Henry Mateo) on the disabled list.
Borbon, 36, was signed as a free agent by San Diego in the off-season, but was released by the Padres in Spring Training. He spent most of the 2003 campaign with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, going 5-2, 2.08 (69.1 IP - 16 ER) in 32 appearances (six starts). The native of Mao, Dominican Republic also went 0-1, 3.12 (8.2 IP - 3 ER) with one save in seven outings with Triple-A Memphis and was 0-1, 20.25 (4.0 IP - 9 ER) in seven appearances with the St. Louis Cardinals. Borbon was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Chicago White Son on June 4, 1988. He has appeared in 368 Major League games, going 16-16 with a 4.68 ERA (271.0 IP - 141 ER) and six saves with Atlanta, Los Angeles, Toronto, Houston and St. Louis. Borbon is 45-32 with a 3.02 ERA (729.2 IP - 245 ER) and 15 saves in 311 minor league outings (62 starts).
Corcoran, 24, was originally placed on the seven-day disabled list with right elbow impingement syndrome on May 12. He is 0-1, 4.60 (15.2 IP - 8 ER) in nine appearances with the Trappers this season. Corcoran began the season rated by Baseball America as the 27th-best prospect in the Montreal Expos farm system. He split the 2003 season, his third in the Expos system, between Single-A Brevard County, Double-A Harrisburg, Montreal and Edmonton, going 6-4, 1.23 (58.2 IP - 8 ER) with 15 saves in 44 appearances at the minor league level and 0-0, 1.23 (7.1 IP - 1 ER) in two outings with the Expos. Corcoran led Brevard County with 12 saves and 36 of his 44 minor league innings were scoreless. He was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Louisiana State by Montreal on June 15, 2001 and has spent his entire career in the Expos system. Corcoran began the 2004 season with an 11-8 career record and a 2.73 ERA (158.0 IP - 48 ER) and 28 saves in 106 minor league appearances (one start).
Schroder, 25, was 1-0, 0.00 (2.2 IP - 0 ER) in three appearances with the Trappers this season. He began the campaign with Harrisburg going 1-0, 2.61 (10.1 IP - 3 ER) with three saves in nine appearances with the Senators before being promoted. Schroder spent the entire 2003 campaign with Harrisburg, going 9-2 with a 2.84 ERA (82.1 IP - 26 ER) and four saves in 49 appearances. He began his minor league career with Vermont in the New York-Penn League after being selected out of Oklahoma City University in the 19th round of the 2001 draft. Schroder has spent his entire career in the Expos organization and was 13-7 with a 2.26 ERA (167.0 IP - 42 ER) and 22 saves in 115 minor league appearances entering the 2004 season.
