Veteran Lefty Set to Join RailCats

GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats announced the club has agreed to a contract with LHP Moises Melendez for the 2016 season. Melendez will be entering his 10th season of professional baseball after spending last season with fellow Central Division rivals the Lincoln Saltdogs.

Moises Melendez went 0-2 in 2015 posting a 5.40 ERA in 21 games for Lincoln. He made three starts for the Saltdogs last season the first coming against the RailCats at Lincoln on May 25th. Melendez tossed five innings giving up one run on five hits getting a ND in a 3-2 Gary win. He sat out of baseball in 2014 but spent 2013 with Lincoln and in 2012 was with both Lincoln and Wichita in the American Association.

Melendez has primarily been a reliever in his career with 198 games under his belt in relief and 71 starts in 10 seasons. Melendez resume also includes seven seasons of winter league baseball playing in his native Venezuela for his hometown club Águilas del Zulia of the LVBP in Maracaibo. He spent 2011 playing in the Dutch Major League for HCAW and the lefty joins Masato Fukae on the RailCats roster with the distinction of having played baseball professionally in at least three continents (North America, South America and Europe).

Melendez began his career with the Philadelphia Phillies organization as a free agent in 2005 and played his first two seasons in the Venezuela Summer League. In 2006 he struck out 108 in 90.2 innings with a 2.18 ERA and an 8-2 record. He reached as high as low A ball Lakewood in the South Atlantic League in 2008. .

2016 will mark the 15th season of RailCats Baseball in Northwest Indiana. Opening Day for the RailCats' on the South Shore is Friday, May 27th against the Joplin Blasters.
