PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers, your 2013 SPHL President's Cup Champions, have signed veteran center and former Pensacola Ice Pilot Nicklas Lindberg as player/assistant coach.
"It's a tremendous day to have signed a player as great as Nick. Nick will bring a high skill level to our team and to the league," said head coach Rod Aldoff. "The people of Pensacola will remember him from a few years back when he played here for the former Ice Pilots. Nick is a great person and a great leader. He will lead by example and the fans are in for some exciting hockey this year."
Lindberg is a 32-year-old native of Stockholm, Sweden who shoots left, stands 5' 11", and weighs 190 lbs. Last season Lindberg played in 57 games for the Bloomington Blaze in the Central Hockey League (CHL) and put up 53 points (14 goals, 39 assists) and 35 penalty minutes.
All of Lindberg's North American career thus far has been played at the AA level in the ECHL, CHL, and the International Hockey League. He's played in 598 regular season and playoff games with 514 points (160 goals, 354 assists) and 532 penalty minutes.
Lindberg began his North American career in 2004-05 when signed with the Ice Pilots in the ECHL and played on the 2005-06 team with Ice Flyers head coach Rod Aldoff. In his two years with the Ice Pilots he played 141 games, scored 81 points (27 goals, 54 assists), and put up 112 penalty minutes.
Aldoff remarked on Lindberg's role as the team's player/assistant coach as well, "Nick will not only be a tremendous presence on the ice for us but he'll be helping me out as the player/assistant. He's helping to transition his wealth of knowledge and experience into coaching once his playing days are done and this is his first step down that path."
