Vero suffers extra-inning loss

(Jupiter, FL) - The Palm Beach Cardinals came back from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat the Dodgers 6-5 in 10 innings Tuesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. Rayner Laya's base hit with two outs gave the Cardinals the walk-off win. The series ends Wednesday night at 7:05 PM.

Vero Beach used a big third-inning to build a favorable lead. Juan Apodaca walked to start the frame and Jamie Hoffmann bunted his way on base. Xavier Paul doubled in Apodaca and one out later Blake DeWitt singled in two more runs. DeWitt eventually scored on a Drew Locke base hit for a 4-0 advantage.

Palm Beach answered in the bottom half of the third. After Alberto Bastardo struck out the first two batters of the inning, Laya knocked a bouncer into left field to become the Cardinals' first baserunner. Luis Cotto walked and Juan Lucena doubled in Laya. After another walk, Matt Dryer singled home two runners to make it 4-3.

Bastardo settled down in the fourth, but gave up the tying run in the fifth. Lucena poked a one-out single into center and Colby Rasmus bunted for a base hit. Randy Roth's two-out single scored Lucena for the 4-4 tie.

Vero would regain the lead in the sixth. Cory Dunlap singled and went to second an a wild pitch from starter Jose Garcia. Shane Justis then punched a base hit that plated Dunlap and put the Dodgers ahead 5-4.

The Cardinals tied it up in the seventh. Lucena reached base on an error and Rasmus followed up with a double off reliever Jonathan Figueroa. Dryer's ground out to short brought in Lucena to knot the score at five.

The relief corps for Palm Beach held the Dodgers hitless over the final four innings and set the stage for the walk-off win. Kyle Wilson (2-5) entered in the 10th and issued a leadoff walk to Roth. He was sacrificed to second and went to third on Joe Mather's single. After Wilson struck out Brandon Yarbrough, Laya scooted a single past second base to plate the winning run.

It was the Dodgers' 29th one-run loss of the season.
