Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (August 1, 2006) - Dave Gassner might have made his final Major League rehab stint with the Fort Myers Miracle on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium. He looked sharp in his 5.0 innings of work, but the Dunedin Blue Jays got the timely hits in a 5-2 Miracle loss.
Gassner began the fourth inning by retiring the first two hitters. That's when the Blue Jays figured things out. Cory Patton singled to right-center. After a walk to Carlo Cota, Jacob Butler doubled home both runners to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. Scott Dragicevich followed that up with an RBI single to make it 3-0. Gassner went 5.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out one.
The Miracle got one back in the fifth when Trevor Plouffe walked with one out and came around to score on a double by Brock Peterson to cut the deficit to 3-1.
That was as close as the Miracle got. The Blue Jays tacked on an insurance run in seventh when Juan Peralta reached on a two out broken bat single to the mound. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Korey Feiner. One batter later Peralta scored on a single by Robinson Diaz to make it 4-1.
The Miracle made it 4-2 in the eighth when Peterson reached on a bad hop single off the body of the second baseman Cota. Deacon Burns followed with a walk and two batters later Luke Hughes singled home Peterson.
The Blue Jays added one final run in the ninth when Butler and Scott Dragicevich had back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice bunt by Juan Peralta moved the runners over, Aaron Mathews' sac fly put the finishing touches on the Miracle.
The same two teams meet in the rubber game of the three game series on Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Josh Hill (6-4, 5.47) to the mound against Blue Jays RHP Orlando Trias (10-6, 3.62). It is Wayback Wednesday (1941) presented by WJGO 102.9.
