Vermont's Offense Powers Past Muskrats on Monday

LACONIA, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, 12-2 on Monday night in New England Collegiate Baseball League action at the Robbie Mills Sports Complex. The Mountaineers, who have won three straight and lead the Northern Division, improve to 11-1 on the season while the Muskrats fall to 5-6

Vermont's offense was paced by Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington / Haddonfield, N.J.) who had three hits, including his first home run of the summer. Connor Hujsak (Virginia Commonwealth / Goffstown, N.H.) and Matthew Venuto (Fairfield / Mansfield, Mass.) each had two hits. Venuto also scored twice. Gerry Siracusa (UMass Lowell, Kinnelon, N.J.), who has hit safely in all 11 games he's played in, had a hit while driving in two runs. Tyler Cox (Dartmouth / Los Angeles, Calif.) also drove in a pair of runs. Christopher Kahler (George Washington / Coral Springs, Fla.) picked up his second win of the summer, going six innings, striking out four and allowing two runs on five hits. Jake Simon (Fairleigh Dickinson / Lake Worth, Fla.) and James McDowell (Sacred Heart / Brookfield, Conn.) combined for three innings of scoreless relief. McDowell struck out two batters in two innings of work to close out the game.

Kyle Roche suffered the loss for the Muskrats, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and a pair of walks. He struck out four batters in four and two-thirds innings.

Vermont wasted little time, scoring three runs in the first inning. Ben WIlliamson (William & Mary / Midlothian, Va.) led off the game with a single, before Venuto reached on a one-out single. WIlliamson scored on the next play as Cox singled, moving Venuto to third. Hujsak made it 2-0 with a single of his one, scoring Venuto while Cox went to third. Cox scored to make it 3-0 when DiTomaso reached on an error, extending his on-base streak to six games.

The Muskrats cut the deficit to two in the home half, with a two-out solo shot by Patrick Roche. Vermont's Kahler ran into a bit of trouble, but escaped the jam getting a groundout to strand a pair of runners.

Tom Ruscitti (Fairleigh Dickinson / Bayville, N.J.) led off the second with a double, before moving to third on a Williamson groundout. Siracusa pushed across the fourth run with an RBI groundout.

Kahler settled down the next three innings, striking out the last batter of the second frame while getting a pair of double plays to end both the third and fourth innings.

Vermont added four more runs in the fifth. Siracusa extended his hitting streak to 11 games with his first home run of the season to lead off the frame, making it 5-1 in favor of Vermont. A pair of two-out singles by DiTomaso and Christian Pregent (Stetson / Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Jack Cone (William & Mary / Fairfax Station, Va.) scoring on a wild pitch made it 8-1.

The scoring would continue for Vermont in the sixth as Siracusa scored on a double by Venuto, while the latter scored on a ground out, making it 10-1. Vermont added a run in the seventh for an 11-1 lead before another solo shot in the home half added one more for the Muskrats. DiTomaso extended Vermont's lead to 12-2 with a home run in the ninth.

Both teams will return to action on Tuesday, June 21, while swapping locations as the Muskrats will visit the Mountaineers and come to Montpelier Recreation Field for a 6:30 PM. You can tune in online the NECBL Broadcast Network.
