Vermont Uses Late Rally to Come back and Beat Sanford

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Sanford Mainers took on the Vermont Mountaineers on the road on Wednesday night at Montpelier Recreation Field. After jumping out to an early lead, Vermont cameback in the late innings to win 8-6.

Jacob Edwards (UNC-Asheville) made the start and cruised through four innings of work, only allowing one baserunner to get into scoring position. Edwards only gave up two hits, one walk, no runs while striking out five.

The Mainers opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Ryan Turenne (Maine) hit his first home run of the season. His two-run bomb opened up a 2-0 lead. Sanford struck for more in the sixth when the sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs. Highlights in the inning included an Ubaldo Lopez (Georgetown) double, a single by Evan Sleight (Rutgers) and an infield hit by Jonny Barditch (Utah). Sanford held a 6-0 lead when Vermont got out of the jam.

Erry Baldayac (Rhode Island College) took the losing decision on the mound, giving up seven earned runs, walking five and giving up three hits in just over two innings. Brian Craven (Davidson) relieved him and pitched the final two innings, giving up one earned run, two hits, one walk and striking out one.

The Vermont comeback began in the sixth inning when the scored one on a sacrifice fly, but was completed in the seventh inning when the Mountaineers sent nine batters to the plate. A three-run homer, a two-RBI single and a sacrifice fly did in Sanford as they took a 7-6 lead in the seventh. One more insurance run from Vermont put the finishing touches on a 8-6 win.

The Sanford Mainers finish their stretch of four consecutive road games tomorrow as they take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats.
