Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Wilfredo Solano and Sam Roberts both had RBI doubles as the Vermont Lake Monsters scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and picked up their first victory of the season with a 7-4 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Vermont trailed 1-0 in the fifth when Jacob Tanis led off with a walk and then tied tied the game on Solano's RBI double. Solano then advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch as Dayton Alexander walked for a 2-1 Lake Monsters lead. Roberts then laced a line drive to rightcenter for his RBI double before a pair of ValleyCat errors on a Rhett Stafford groundball led to the final two runs of the inning and a 5-1 advantage.
The Lake Monsters added two insurance runs in the eighth after loading the bases with no outs on a double and a pair of walks. After a strikeout, Solano walked forcing home pinch runner Jensi Peralta with one run and John Wooten scored on the other on a Kelvin Rojas sacrifice fly. Tri-City put a bit of a rally together in the ninth off reliever Tucker Healey with three runs, including a two-run double from Joe Sclafani.
Vermont starter Chris Lamb (1-0) allowed just one unearned run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts over five innings to pick up the victory, while Brent Powers struckout two in three perfect innings of relief. ValleyCat starter Aaron West gave up just one hit over three scoreless innings before Juan Minaya allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Solano finished the night 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI as Vermont rebounded from its 10-2 loss to the ValleyCats on Monday night in the season opener for both teams. Andrew Aplin and Emilio King both had two hits for Tri-City.
The four-game series between the two teams continues on Wednesday and Thursday with single games at Tri-City beginning at 7:00 pm. The Lake Monsters then go to Lowell for a three-game series against the Spinners before returning home to Centennial Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Monday.
