
Vermont Tops Winnipesaukee 8-5 on NECBL Opening Night

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- The Vermont Mountaineers kicked off their 2017 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season with a win on Wednesday, as they topped the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, 8-5.
The Mountaineers tallied 14 hits and allowed just five en route to their first victory of the season. Vermont got a strong starting pitching performance from Jared Skolnicki (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kent State), who allowed just two runs on one hit over five innings of work.
The Mountaineers scored three runs in the first inning and didn't trail from then on. Outfielder Jeffery Scott put Vermont on the board with a two-RBI single that plated Abdel Guadalupe (Davie, Fla./Broward) and Ryan McSwain (Redwood City, Calif./U of Nevada Reno). Second baseman Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) later scored on an error by Winnipesaukee's catcher.
Vermont then added a run in the third, fourth, and sixth innings, before putting up two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
The Muskrats scored all five of their runs on home runs. Second baseman Sean Mazzio (West Chester, Pa./Wagner) hit a two-run homer in the top of the third, scoring Hunter Markwardt (Argyle, Texas/Abilene Christian). Kolby Claborn (Lubbock, Texas/Abilene Christain) tacked on three more Winnipesaukee runs in the sixth with a three-run shot to left field.
Neil Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y./Wagner) gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits over three-plus innings of work. Abbatiello suffered the loss for Winnipesaukee
Mountaineers reliever Reese Robinson (Dayton, Ohio/U of Cincinnati) got the win after coming into the game in the sixth and allowing three runs on three hits over two innings of work. Ryan Fernandez (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough CC), who gave up just one hit over two innings, picked up a save.
Vermont will travel to Sanford, Maine Thursday evening to face the Mainers in the Mountaineers' first road trip of the year. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online .
