Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - It was opening night in Montpelier for the Vermont Mountaineers as they welcomed the Newport Gulls. The Mountaineers started off the season with a bang with a big 10-1 victory, at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
The Vermont squad wasted no time getting on the board, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first after some impressive defense in the top of the inning. Vermont swiped three bags and gave themselves a comfortable lead heading into the second.
It was a fairly rough start for the Louisville starter Seamus Barrett as he gave up five runs all earned on 4 hits. The righty did gain some momentum back and put up zeros for the Gulls in the following two innings.
The Gulls were unable to find any offense tonight as the six pitchers for Vermont Nick Durgan (Stetson/Melbourne, Fla.), Carlos Torres (Lehigh/ Bethlehem, Pa.) Matthew Scibilio (Colby College/ Scituate, Mass.), Jake Simon( Fairleigh Dickinson/Lake Worth, Fla.), Jack Pletter (Colby College/Orange, Conn.) and Jack Metzger (Dartmouth/Powell, Ohio) threw a combined no hitter and held the Gulls to one run.
After the first inning there was no scoring all the way until the sixth inning when the Gulls finally put a run on the board. An unearned run was the only one they scored.
Trent Farquhar scored the only run in the 6th for the Gulls. Durgan gets the win tonight for the Mountaineers and improves to 1-0 on the season while Barrett drops to 0-1 on the season with the loss.
The Mountaineers get back into action at home tomorrow night against Vineyard in the second game of the season, with high hopes of a talent filled season to continue trending in the right direction. You can follow along all season long online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
