Vermont Only Musters One Hit in 2-1 Loss against Valley

Holyoke, MA- The Mountaineers were only able to record one hit in nine innings Thursday night in Holyoke, as Valley topped Vermont 2-1.

The only hit of the night was a two out double in the top of the third inning by Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi), extending his hit streak to 11 games. He would be stranded out second.

Valley would record six hits during the game, but two of them were solo home runs, one off the bat of Richard Constantine (Huntsville, AL/ Western Kentucky) and Jaylen Smith (Lithonia, GA/ Kennesaw State). Both were hit off Vermont starter Jackson Shaver (Muskegon, MI/ Eastern Michigan), who went six innings, giving up two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out six. It was his third loss of the year, now falling to 2-3.

Vermont was able to push across their one run in the top of the sixth inning, courtesy of four walks. Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) walked to lead off the inning, and would come around to score on a wild pitch, the only run of Vermont for the night.

Ricky Reynoso (San Diego, CA/ Pacific) would come in for the final six outs of the game, picking up his third save of the season, not allowing a baserunner in two innings of work.

Vermont (11-18) will have a day off Friday before returning to Recreation Field Saturday to take on North Adams (11-17), who now sits a half a game above the Mountaineers in the standings. Vermont is now 9 games back of first place Valley (19-8), and 5.5 games back of both Keene (17-13) and Sanford (15-11).
