
Vermont Loses in Battle with Blues

MONTPELIER, Vt. - For the first time in 2022, the Vermont Mountaineers suffered back-to-back losses and this one came at the hands of the second best team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, the Bristol Blues. The final score from Montpelier Recreation Field was 11-6 in favor of the guests.
The Mountaineers fall to 25-6 while the Blues improve to 24-8.
Bristol jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on some defensive miscues by Vermont. Matt Smith doubled to start the game, followed by a single by Jay Harry. The ball got by the right fielder and allowed Smith to score and the throw into third got away, allowing Harry to score.
Vermont evened the score in the second and then gained the lead Tom Ruscitti started the inning by, followed by a double to Ben Williamson to put runners in scoring position. An infield single by Santino Rosso scored Ruscitti, before a single and stolen base by Jack Cone put runners in scoring position again with no outs. A pair of sacrifice flies by Christen Pregent and Nick Notarangelo made it 4-2 in favor of Vermont.
Vermont starter Nick Durgin settled down after a rough first. He retired seven in a row after a leadoff single in the second, including five strikeouts, before a one-out double in the fourth. A single. Derek Tenney singled to right to score Joseph Rios to get the Blues within a run. Durgin got out of the jam, picking up his seventh strikeout of the night to strand a runner at third.
Bristol put a runner on first to start the fifth with an out that chased Durgin from the game. Zach Byron came in and got the next two outs to keep Vermont ahead 4-3.
However, Bristol regained the lead in the sixth. A single and a walk put runners on base and Chaz Myers belted a 2-1 pitch over the left center field wall to give the Blues a 6-4 lead.
The Blues added four runs in the seventh, with the big hit coming from Jack Lynch as he belted a pinch hit three-run blast to right field to give Bristol 10-4 lead.
Vermont had an opportunity in the home half of the seventh. A pair of walks to Cameron Gill and Notarangelo started the inning. Tyler Cox welcomed Blue's reliever Alec Couture with a single to right, and put runners on the corners with no outs, scoring Gill. A walk to Josten loaded the bases with no outs. A Mark Trotta ground out scored Notarangelo to make it 10-6. However, Couture got a strikeout and a pop up to strand a pair in scoring position.
Durgin got the no decision in four and a thirds inning of work. He finished with eight strikeouts and gave up three runs on seven hits. Byron took the loss, giving up three runs in an inning of work. Matt Smith got the win going an inning for Bristol.He pitched the fifth inning when the Blues took the lead and got three straight outs.
Vermont hits the road for a quick trip to Laconia, New Hampshire to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats for a 6 p.m. tilt. You can follow along online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
