Vermont Improves to 12-1 with 2-1 Win over Winnipesaukee

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers held on for a close 2-1 victory over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats in a Northern Division New England Collegiate Baseball League contest on Tuesday night at Historic Montpelier Recreation Field. The Mountaineers improved to 12-1 on the year while the Muskrats dropped to 5-7.

Vermont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning with a timely two-out double by Matthew Venuto (Fairfield / Mansfield, Mass.) . With a full count, Evan Fox (Stony Brook / Ballston Spa, N.Y.) was going on the pitch and Venuto blooped one to left center field and Fox was easily across the plate.

Nick Durgin (Stetson / Melbourne, Fla.) had an incredible start for Vermont, pitching five shutout innings with eight strikeouts, matching his season high while just giving up two hits for his second win of the season.

Trevor Anibal (Southern New Hampshire / Bedford, N.H.) came in during the sixth inning for his first appearance, picking up his first strikeout of the summer. He ran into some trouble with two outs but right fielder Jack Cone (WIlliam & Mary / Fairfax Station, Va.) gunned down the Muskrat runner attempting to score to end the threat and inning.

The Muskrats threatened in the top of the seventh as well with a runner at second with just one out. However, Anibal got a pop up to first and a fly out to right to end the threat and kept it 1-0 in favor of Vermont.

After Jack Metzger (Dartmouth / had a quick inning in the eighth, Vermont added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame. Gerry Siracusa (UMass Lowell / Kinnelon, N.J.) doubled down the line to start the frame, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington / Haddonfield) hit a weak line drive to center, easily scoring Siracusa to make it 2-0 Vermont.

Griffin Young started for Winnipesaukee and went four innings. He only gave up one hit on a run but was handed the loss.

Vermont begins a three-game road trip to Connecticut on Wednesday. The Mountaineers will visit the Mystic Schooners at Dodd Stadium for a 6:30 cross-divisional matchup. You can tune in online at the NECBL Broadcast Network.
