MYSTIC, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers held off a late rally against the Mystic Schooners, holding on for a 12-7 New England Collegiate Baseball League victory on Sunday night at Fitch High School.
With the win, the Mountaineers are now 21-17, becoming the third team in the league to reach that win total, while sitting a half a game out of the third and final playoff spot in the Northern Division. Vermont also took the season-series from Mystic, after taking the first game by a score of 6-5 back on July 7th at Montpelier Recreation Field.
Beau Keathley (Taylor, Mich. / Oakland University) earned his fourth win of the season in four innings of relief, allowing just one run while striking out seven batters. Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts Lowell) hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season, while driving in three runs.
Vermont put two runs across in the first inning, with the first two batters reaching on back-to-back doubles. Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) led off the game with a double, before coming around to score on a Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William & Mary) double. McDermott moved to third on a throw home, before scoring on a ground out by Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University).
Mystic responded with a run in the home half of the first frame. David Beam started off with a single, before Keathley got the next two Schooner batters out. A two-out single by Ben Maycock put runners on second and third before Jerome Huntzinger plated Beam with a single himself.
After a scoreless second inning, Vermont scored once in the third on a RBI single by Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) that scored Robison with two outs, before adding four runs in the fourth for a 7-1 lead. Three straight two-out singles by Gauthier, McDermott, and Robison scored the first run in the frame, before Climo hit a three-run bomb to extend Vermont's lead to six.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Two straight walks started the inning, before Evan Giordano reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases. Charping walked to bring in Robison, before a sacrifice fly by Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) made it 9-1 in favor of Vermont.
Mystic would not go away, scoring once in the bottom of the sixth before tacking on four runs in the seventh. Vermont added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning before Mystic concluded the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
Nicholas DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J. / Stony Brook University) pitched two and a third innings in relief, allowing just one run on a walk and a hit while striking out three batters.
Vermont gets a well deserved off on Monday, July 22, before returning to the friendly confines of Montpelier Recreation Field with an important Northern Division contest against the North Adams SteepleCats. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
