Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
MORGANTOWN, WV --- A Nick Collins three-run double, Luke Persico solo homer and five strong innings from Dakota Chalmers led the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 5-1 victory over West Virginia and a split of the New York-Penn League Thursday night doubleheader after the Black Bears took the opener 5-1 at Monongalia County Ballpark.
The Lake Monsters started the nightcap by loading the bases on an Eli White leadoff single, Nate Mondou hit by pitch and Eric Marinez walk before Collins cleared the bases with the three-run double up the left-centerfield gap. Collins, who advanced to third on the throw to home plate on the double, then scored on a Tyler Ramirez sacrifice fly off Black Bears starter Matt Anderson (2-2) for the fourth run of the first inning.
Vermont added a fifth run on Persico's leadoff home run in the top of the fourth. For Persico, who also doubled in the first inning, it was his second home run of the season and the first team homer for Vermont since August 8th.
Chalmers tossed four scoreless innings before walking the first two batters of the fifth inning ahead of Sandy Santos RBI single that cut the Vermont lead to 5-1. But Chalmers (5-2) finished off the inning with a strikeout, flyout and groundout to finish off his five innings with one run allowed on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The game two victory snapped Vermont's 10-game road losing streak and was the Lake Monsters first road win since July 19th at Connecticut. Vermont (22-36) has also won three of its last five games overall after a season-high 11-game losing streak.
In the opener, West Virginia snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Lake Monsters reliever Dalton Sawyer (0-2). Albert Baur and Ty Moore both had RBI singles, while two unearned runs scored on a throwing error by third baseman JaVon Shelby.
Vermont had gotten two of its three hits in the fourth inning to score its only run of game one. Eric Marinez led off with a double, advanced to third on an Eli White single and scored on a Miguel Mercedes sacrifice fly for 1-0 lead. The Black Bears tied the game in bottom of fourth on their own sac fly off Vermont starter Brandon Bailey, who allowed one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts over five innings.
Cam Vieaux (2-2) allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts over six innings to pick up the win for West Virginia (26-32), while Stephen Alemais was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Lake Monsters will wrap up their first-ever visit to West Virginia with the finale of the three-game series against the Black Bears on Friday. Vermont then heads to Aberdeen for another three-game series before returning home to historic Centennial Field on Tuesday against the Lowell Spinners.
