WILD PITCHES LEAD BROOKLYN PAST VERMONT 2-1 ON MONDAY
boxscoreâ=80- BROOKLYN, NY --- Wildness from Vermont reliever Malik Jones in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the Brooklyn Cyclones to score the go ahead run on a wild pitch and beat the Lake Monsters 2-1 in New York-Penn League action Monday night at MCU Park.
Jones struckout Walter Rasquin to leadoff the bottom of the eighth, but Rasquin reached first base safely on a wild pitch. Then after stealing second base, Rasquin scored the go ahead run on Jones second and third wild pitches of the inning for the 2-1 Brooklyn lead. Jones (0-2) would strikeout the next two batters and a groundout to end the inning.
The Lake Monsters got a one-out Ryan Gridley single and two Payton Squier single in the ninth, but Brooklyn reliever Marcus Renteria struckout three including Will Toffey to end the game as Vermont finished 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Vermont had tied the game in the eighth as Will Toffey was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and advanced to second on a passed ball before scoring on a Logan Farrar RBI double to rightfield for the Lake Monsters lone run of the night. Vermont is now 14-14 in one-run games this season with 13 of the Lake Monsters last 22 losses by just one run.
Starter Wyatt Marks allowed one run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over the first 3 2/3 innings for Vermont, including two strikeouts in the first, third and fourth innings. The Cyclones scored their run off Marks in the third on a Rasquin two-out RBI single to left.
After striking out the first two Cyclones in the fourth inning, Marks gave up a double and walked two straight to load the bases before reliever Bryce Conley came on to get a groundout to keep game 1-0 Brooklyn. Conley then tossed two more scoreless innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts
Brooklyn starter Trent Johnson, who entered the game 2-5 with a 6.70 ERA for the Cyclones this season, kept the Lake Monsters off balance as he scattered five hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings with one walk, two strikeouts and 11 groundball outs.
Farrar went 3-for-4 with the RBI double and Jordan Devencenzi 2-for-3 as the Lake Monsters outhit Brooklyn 8-4. Rasquin went 1-for-4 with a run, RBI and two steals for Brooklyn (18-47), which has won three straight games, while Connor O'Neil (1-2) picked up the win and Renteria earned his first save.
Vermont (37-29) now leads the Stedler Division by 3 1/2 games over Connecticut, which won 6-2 at Aberdeen on Monday. The Lake Monsters, who have lost six straight and 13 of last 16 games at Brooklyn, will play the second of the three-game series against the Cyclones Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
