KEENE, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped its third-straight contest, suffering a 12-5 loss to the Keene Swamp Bats on Friday night from Alumni Field.

Vermont falls to 16-10-1 on the season while the Swamp Bats gained ground in the North Division, improving to 9-17. The season series is now tied at two games a piece, with the home team winning in all four contests.

After a scoreless first inning, Keene's offense exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. A two-run shot by Jake Owen scored the first two runs of the game. Evan Gorforth reached base on an error, advancing all the way to second on the play. He came around to score on a single by Greg Bozzo. After taking a 5-0 lead, Garrett Rice capped off the scoring with a three-run blast to make it 8-0.

All hope looked lost for the Mountaineers, as both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth innings. However, Vermont made it a game with a five-run fifth to make it a three-run deficit.

Nate Stocum reached after being hit by a pitch with one out. TJ Williams belted his first homerun of the season to make it 8-2. After Keene reliever Samuel Drumheller got a strikeout, Brandon Butterworth doubled to center field. A walk to Santino Rosso put two on for Marshall Toole, who ripped a double to right field, scoring Butterworth. Rosso scored on a wild pitch as Toole moved to third, making it 8-4. Back-to-back two-out walks to Grant Voytovich and Tyler Cox loaded the bases for Vermont. Nathan Goranson was hit by a pitch, pushing Toole across the plate and making it 8-5.

Keene got two of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. A two-out two-run double by Bozzo made it 10-5 in favor of the home team. The score remained the same through the sixth and seventh innings. In the bottom of the eighth Blake DeLamielleure hit a solo shot with two outs to make it 11-5 in favor of Keene. Jordan Smith made it 12-5 as he reached on a triple to right field, before scoring on a throwing error. Vermont put two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth, but a ground out ended the game.

The Mountaineers return home on Saturday, July 8 when they host the North Adams SteepleCats at 6:30 p.m. There will be a special pregame ceremony starting at 6:10 p.m. honoring local baseball legend, Louis "Crip" Polli, the first Italian Born Ballplayer to Play in the Major Leagues. The game day sponsor is the "Family and Friends of Lou 'Crip' Polli".
