Vermont Ends 2012 Season With 4-0 Win Over Aberdeen

BURLINGTON, VT --- Five Lake Monsters pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as Vermont wrapped up the 2012 New York-Penn League season with a 4-0 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds at historic Centennial Field on Wednesday night.

Starter Michael Ynoa allowed two hits with four strikeouts over the first three innings, while Seth Streich two hits and two strikeouts in his three scoreless innings.  Ynoa tossed six scoreless innings over his last two appearances a fter giving up eight runs in 1 1/3 innings at Tri-City on August 26, while Streich did not allow an earned run over 23 1/3 innings in his last 10 relief outings.

Omar Duran, Stuart Pudenz and Tucker Healy each added a scoreless inning as Vermont picked up its fourth shutout victory in the last nine games after none over the first 67 games of the season. The five pitchers also combined for 11 strikeouts on Wednesday, giving Vermont a team-record 685 strikeouts for the season. That included a team-record 344 strikeouts at Centennial Field, breaking the old record of 338 set in 2008.

Aberdeen starter Jorge Rivera tossed five no-hit innings with eight strikeouts, but wildness in the third inning led to Vermont's first run. Rivera walked Austin Booker and Daniel Robertson to open the third before hitting Brett Vertigan to load the bases. The Lake Monsters then scored as Jacob Tanis grounded into a 6-4-3 doube play. Vermont got its first hit of the game in the sixth off reliever Mark Blackmar as Vertigan singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a Matt Olson single to left for a 2-0 lead.

The Lake Monsters added a pair of unearned insurance runs in the eighth as a Tanis two-out flyball to center was dropped by Alexander Mercedes for a two-base error allowing Booker to score from second base. After a walk to Olson, Chris Bostick lined a double to left to score Tanis for a 4-0 lead. Bostick's double was the 118th of the season for the Lake Monsters, the second-most ever for a Vermont team behind 126 doubles in 1999.

 

After a leadoff walk in the ninth, Healy struckout the side swinging to end the game and the season. Vermont finishes the year 33-43 overall, but 23-15 at Centennial Field (including wins in five of the last seven). The 23 home wins are tied with 1997 and 2011 for the fourth-most wins in a season at Centennial for the Lake Monsters.
