-SPIKES COMPLETE 2012 SEASON TONIGHT: The State College Spikes finish at home tonight as Medlar Field at Lubrano Park is the site for the Spikes' final contest of the year in the second game of a two-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. State College has won five of the nine meetings between the two teams this year, including all four games against the Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Mahoning Valley leads the all-time series, 37-32.
-LAST GAME: Pirates outfielder Starling Marte made a rehab appearance for the State College Spikes on Tuesday, but it was Samuel Gonzalez who stole the show by scoring Derek Trent with a single in the bottom of the eleventh inning to give the Spikes a 5-4 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Tyler Glasnow (4 IP, 0 ER), Dalton Friend (5 IP, 1 ER), and Kyle Haynes (W, 2 IP, 0 R) combined on the Spikes' pitching effort.
-HEREDIA MAKES LAST SPIKES START OF 2012 TONIGHT: Right-hander Luis Heredia makes his final start in a State College uniform this year when he faces the Scrappers tonight. Last time out, the 18-year-old went 4 2/3 innings against Jamestown and gave up two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two in a no-decision. Heredia has made one start against the Scrappers this year, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk over five innings on July 18 at Eastwood Field.
-MOREL THE SCRAPPERS' LAST STARTER OF THE YEAR: Right-hander Luis Morel is slated to start for the Scrappers tonight. Morel has faced the Spikes once this year, giving up the loss on July 18 when he allowed three runs over three innings. The righty has a 3.60 ERA on the road this year (6.75 at home), and has earned both of his wins with the Scrappers away from home. Morel has also made four appearances (three starts) for the Arizona League Indians in 2012.
-MARTE MAKES REHAB APPEARANCE WITH SPIKES TUESDAY: Injured Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte led off and served as State College's designated hitter for the evening in last night's game. The native of the Dominican Republic reached base via an error in the first inning, but did not collect a hit in five at-bats. The 22-year made just one appearance for the Spikes before moving on to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday.
-SPIKE MARKS: Tyler Gaffney's 20 times hit by pitch still lead the loop...Samuel Gonzalez is tied for the NYPL lead with 5 sacrifice flies...State College pitchers have allowed just 18 home runs, least in the NYPL...The Spikes can finish the season in third place in the Pinckney Division with a win over the Scrappers tonight...D.J.
