Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 4-0, in the decisive Game 3 of the 2015 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Northern Division finals at Recreation Field on Saturday night.

With the victory, Vermont clinches its first NECBL finals appearance since 2009 and seeks its first title since 2007.

The Mountaineers will take on the Mystic Schooners in the league finals, with Game 1 scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. start on Sunday night at Fitch High School.

The Mountaineers got on the board right away in first inning, when rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off with a single. After leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Parenty to second with one out, designated hitter Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) walked to setup first and second with one out. Shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) followed with an RBI double to make the score 1-0 Mountaineers.

Vermont excelled with their small ball style that worked so effectively all summer. In the second, first baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) singled and stole second. Centerfielder Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Rosenbaum to third. The next hitter, Parenty, smacked a fly ball to deep center field to score Rosenbaum and open up a 2-0 lead.

The Mountaineers added insurance runs in the fifth, when Pasteur scored on a wild pitch, and in the eighth, when Wilson crossed home on a Dudek smashed double, to put the game out of reach at 4-0.

Vermont scored the four runs despite leaving 14 runners on base. The team has stranded 27 runners over its last two games.

The pitching was phenomenal, as starter Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J. / Manhattan) tossed five scoreless innings en route to improving to 1-0 in the postseason. The righthander allowed just four hits and one walk, while striking out three.

Relievers Teddy Rodliff (West Babylon, N.Y. / Stony Brook) and Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) combined to deal four scoreless to close the game. The duo gave up just three hits and struck out three. Delaplane earned his second save of the playoffs and twelfth of the summer.

North Adams starter Matthew Kostalos (Staten Island, N.Y. / St. Thomas Aquinas) took the loss to fall to 0-1 in the postseason. The righthander hurled six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and four walks. He struck out six.
