Venom Game Preview: West Texas at Amarillo

Amarillo, TX 3/26/10- The Amarillo Venom will host the first IFL football game in the Amarillo Civic Center since their 2004 championship victory this Saturday, March 27th at 7pm versus the West Texas Roughnecks.

Amarillo (1-0), won their first game of the 2010 season two Saturdays ago in Odessa 53-27. Quarterback Julian Reese went 13 for 19 with 155 yards and four touchdowns. Defensive back Kevin Patterson sparkled on the defensive side, collecting a team-high 10 tackles along with an IFL Week 3-high two interceptions. Three of the first four weeks of the 2010 season have been byes for the Venom, who now play 13 straight weeks to end the regular season.

West Texas (1-2), have lost their last two games after starting the season with a win March 6th. The Roughnecks are coming off a tough loss last week, losing 47-35 to the Corpus Christi Hammerheads (West Texas was outscored 27-8 in the second half). Through three games as Roughnecks quarterback, Tommy Jones has averaged 178 yards/game while totaling five touchdowns and nine interceptions. Former Texas A&M Aggie standout running back Jorvorskie Lane leads West Texas in rushing with 77 yards and four touchdowns.

In the Venom's previous meeting with West Texas (March 13th), Amarillo jumped on top of the Roughnecks 13-0 to begin the game (led 34-20 at halftime). Amarillo snared four interceptions while not turning the ball over. Two of Venom wide receiver DuVuaghn Flagler's five catches went for scores while rushing one for a second quarter touchdown. Amarillo outscored West Texas 13-0 in the fourth quarter (the only time that has occurred to the Roughnecks this season). Final score Amarillo 53, West Texas 27.

Venom Head Coach Jon Lyles on tomorrow's game versus West Texas: "They will come ready to play. We can't take them for granted. It's going to take our best game of the season in order to beat them."

THE STAKES: Amarillo won their season-opening game in Odessa two Saturdays ago and now seeking back-to-back wins for the first time since July of 2008.

THE SERIES: The Venom will take on West Texas for the second and final time this season tonight. There are only three teams in the "Lonestar West Division", making tonight's matchup critical. If Amarillo wins, they'll own the tiebreaker over the Roughnecks for the remainder of the season.
