Amarillo, TX 4/15/10 - The Amarillo Venom have traded defensive back Ricky Wilson to the West Texas Roughnecks for future considerations, while signing defensive back Darrius Battles and defensive lineman Brandon Jenkins, the team announced Thursday.
"Darrius is a fast, cerebral defensive back who is fundamentally sound," commented Venom Head Coach Jon Lyles. "Brandon is a young talent who has a tremendous upside. He's also very athletic for his frame."
Battles, the Bachelor's Degree in General Studies graduate, collected 84 total tackles and four interceptions over his four-year stretch at the University of Louisiana-Monroe. The Mobile, Alabama native has stopped in three cities over the past three seasons including a stint with the Cleveland Browns in 2008, the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2009, and Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings earlier this year.
Jenkins, the Memphis, Tennessee local, total in 51 tackles (7.5 for a loss) in his four-year career (43 games) at the University of Mississippi. The 6-foot-5, 295 pounder was the ninth Ole Miss player to sign with the Carolina Panthers during training camp in school history in 2008. Several notable Ole Miss Alumni who have gone to Carolina include Ken Lucas, Keydrick Vincent, and five-time Pro Bowl tight end Wesley Walls. Jenkins finished last season as a member of the Tennessee Valley Vipers of the af2.
