June 27, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs announced today that veteran defenseman Mike Vellinga has agreed to terms to return for the 2005-2006 season. He joins Chris Kenady and Steeve Villeneuve as the third returning player from last year.
One of only three players to play in all 72 games last season, the 6'2", 212 pound native of Chatham, Ontario, had 15 points (4 goals, 11 assists), 73 penalty minutes and his +23 led all Ice Dogs defenseman. In the playoffs, he played all seven games, registering two assists and 10 penalty minutes with a +3. Originally a 7th round pick (#184 overall) by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, he takes up one of only four veteran slots permitted on each roster under the CBA, having played in excess of 260 professional games.
"We're very happy to have him back", said Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations, Malcolm Cameron. "He had a very successful year with the Ice Dogs, with his plus-minus leading all defenseman on the team. He always came up with a timely hit and we'll be looking forward to his veteran leadership this year."
Opening night is Friday, October 28th, versus the Fresno Falcons at 7:30 PM. Season tickets for the 2005-06 season are on sale now, and can be secured by depositing just $100 per seat. Call (562) ICE-DOGS for visit www.icedogs.com for more information.
