Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Tampa, FL– United Soccer Leagues announced Tuesday the Week 18 Team of the Week for the A-League, honoring Virginia Beach's Dante Washington as the A-League Player of the Week. This is the second week in a row that a Virginia Beach Mariner has been named the A-League Player of the Week. Forward Carlos Garcia was honored for Week 17 for his two goals and two assists over Toronto and Atlanta on August 2 and August 6. The Virginia Beach Mariners picked up a key victory in the race for the playoffs by adding to Atlanta's slump with a 3-1 win over the sliding Silverbacks. Forward Dante Washington played a part in all three tallies for the Mariners. Washington opened the scoring in the 18th minute on an assist from Jakob Fenger and set up Hamisi Amani-Dove two minutes later to give Virginia Beach a 2-0 lead.

The Silverbacks pulled within one on a goal from Leslie Fitzpatrick before Washington put the game away with a second tally in the 84th. Washington is the league leader in points (36) with Portland's Alan Gordon (35) and Byron Alvarez (32) right on his heels. He trails Gordon by two in the goals table with 15. Mariners' goalkeeper Matt Nelson was also named to the A-League Team of the Week for his eight saves in the Mariners' 3-1 win over Atlanta on August 11.
