Serioux Transferred to Millwall

August 17, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Toronto Lynx News Release

(TORONTO, ON) –It's official! The tenacious Toronto Lynx defender/midfielder, Adrian Serioux, after spending his entire professional career with the Toronto Lynx, has been transferred to Millwall FC of the English First Division. In his first match with the Club over the past weekend, Serioux was outstanding and named "Man of the Match" in a 2-0 victory over Leicester City. His intensity and long throw-ins have already made him a favourite with Millwall supporters.

Serioux' tenacity caught the eye of the new Canadian National Team head coach, Frank Yallop this season and as a result earned an invitation to the National Team Development Camp in Vancouver earlier this summer. His impressive performance in a friendly versus Millwall during this camp led to the transfer. Lynx head coach, Duncan Wilde maximized Serioux' talent by switching him from his traditional defending position to holding midfield this season.

"It's bittersweet," said Wilde. "On one hand it's a great opportunity for Adrian and we wish him the best of luck, but on the other, the Lynx have lost one of the best players in the A-League. This move underscores the philosophy of the club which supports and encourages the long term career goals of our players in moving up to higher leagues. We take great pride in our ability to develop quality players and the number of Lynx alumni playing abroad".

Serioux' best season with the Lynx was in 2000 when he was selected as a second team A-League All-Star and earned the Toronto Lynx Defensive Player of the Year award. During his tenure with the Lynx, the Scarborough native and product of the Scarborough National Malvern Soccer Club, became a fan favourite and one of the best defensive players in the A-League using his speed, athleticism and aggressiveness to shut down opponents.

LYNX ALUMNI STRONG PRESENCE IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Serioux' impressive performance at the developmental camp also earned him his first call up to the Canadian National Team for the World Cup qualifying match versus Guatemala on August 18th in Vancouver. He will join four other former Lynx stars in Frank Yallop's 18-player roster which includes Pat Onstad, the Lynx starting goalkeeper in their inaugural 1997 season. He is joined by defender/midfielder, Paul Stalteri and striker, Dwayne DeRosario, both former teammates of Onstad on the 1997 squad. Young midfielder, Atiba Hutchinson, of Helsingborg in the Swedish Premier League rounds out the former Lynx contingent for the match.

LYNX HOST 2 MATCHES THIS WEEK

As the 2004 A-League season enters its final two weeks, Lynx fans will have two opportunities to catch their team in action at Centennial Park Stadium this week. The Lynx will take on the high-flying Virginia Beach Mariners tomorrow night at 7:30pm for Coaches Appreciation Night presented by Heineken as the Lynx honour all the soccer coaches and clubs for their continuing support. In conjunction with Direct Kicks, the match will also feature the "Cleats for Kids" campaign to collect used soccer equipment for world wide distribution to needy kids. On the field, the match promises to be a wide-open offensive showdown featuring two of the A-League's best strikers. Virginia Beach's Dante Washington leads the A-League in scoring with 15 goals and 6 assists for 36 points and is the feature player on the second highest scoring team in the league. Having equaled the Lynx single season scoring record of 13 goals, Ali Gerba, will be looking to establish a new mark and capture the A-League scoring title. The Mariners are in the thick of a tough playoff fight having recovered from a rocky start to the season to creep within 6 points of 4th place Rochester. With only 4 games remaining on their schedule, the Mariners cannot afford to drop any points tomorrow night in Toronto.

Hot on the heels of Wednesday's match, the Lynx will welcome the Richmond Kickers to town on Saturday, August 21st at 7:30pm as they host their annual Multicultural Night presented by Inaria and media partner, CHIN International Radio. Fans will be regaled with musical entertainment from around the world starting at 7:00. After missing the playoffs last season for the first time in franchise history, the Kickers have rebounded this year and currently sit in second place in the Eastern Conference with only 2 points behind the Montreal Impact. The Kickers are a very well rounded team boasting three players, McColm Cephas, Matthew Delicate and Kevin Jeffery, who rank in the League's top 15 in scoring. Goalkeeper, Ronnie Pascale is also enjoying a solid season and leads the A-League in wins (15) and saves (128).
