Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
Anthony Raglani's Florida State League record-tying 3rd grand slam of the season lifted the Dodgers to an 18-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader, but Jupiter came back to win the nightcap 8-3. That win snapped the Dodgers 11-game winning streak over the Hammerheads. Vero's victory in the first game snapped their season-long 5-game losing streak. The series continues Saturday night at 6:30 PM with a fireworks show to follow the game on "Back to School Night."
The first game was played to complete a contest suspended on June 25 due to rain. The Dodgers were leading 7-2 at the time play was halted. They wasted little time adding to the already healthy advantage. Cole Bruce doubled to lead off the bottom of the 5th, Xavier Paul reached on an error and Jimmy Rohan walked. With one out on a 3-2 count, Raglani delivered his record-setting home run. The Dodgers tacked on six more in the sixth, highlighted by a Cory Dunlap 3-run homer. Raglani then added a solo shot in the 8th to give him 17 long balls for the season.
The Dodgers recorded season highs with the 18 runs and 20 hits. Their four homers also matched a season-high. Raglani and Rohan each tallied 5 RBI and Matt Kemp hit his 25th home run, leaving him one homer shy of tying Adrian Beltre for the franchise record in single-season home runs. Danny Muegge picked up the win by completing the 5th inning he started on June 25. He retired all three batters he faced and improved his record to 7-2. Justin Simmons and Wesley Wright each threw two scoreless relief innings to seal the win.
Jupiter was nearly as dominating the second game. They touched Vero Beach starter Jonathan Figueroa for one run in the first, two runs in the second and three runs in the third. In all the Hammerheads scored in five of the seven innings played. Former Dodgers farmhand Alejandro De Aza led the way, going 3-4 and scoring twice.
Matt Kemp's first inning single scored Raglani, who had doubled, and tied the game at 1. However, Jupiter starting pitcher Manuel Olivera settled down to retire seven of the next eight. Vero picked runs in the fourth and fifth, but left two men on in each inning. Olivera (3-4) set down the final five hitters to go the distance and earn the win.
