(Vero Beach, FL) - Cole Bruce hit a home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Vero Beach Dodgers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Palm Beach Cardinals. Ryan Russ added three hits for Vero Beach. The series continues Sunday at 5:00 PM with Blake Johnson taking the hill for the Dodgers.

Palm Beach scratched out single runs in the 2nd and 3rd to hand starter Scott Elbert his third tough-luck loss of the season. Vero Beach has scored a total of eight runs in his five starts and Saturday was the fourth one-run decision they've dropped when Elbert takes the mound. The left-hander entered the game with a 1.89 ERA, good for 9th in the Florida State League. The loss also drops Vero Beach to 2-9 in one-run games overall.

The Cardinals first run came in the second inning. Terry Evans blasted a double off the top of the center field fence to begin the inning. Mike Ferris followed with an opposite field single to make it a 1-0 game.

In the third, Elbert dealt back-to-back walks to Matt Pagnozzi and Simon Williams. Sean Danielson sacrificed each runner up a base. Then with the infield playing in, Juan Lucena hit a grounder to second that bought enough time for Pagnozzi to score and make it 2-0.

The Dodgers left the bases loaded in the first inning and stranded two runners in scoring position in the third. They then managed only one more hit until Bruce laced a line drive homer to left with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
