The Dodgers kept the home crowd cheering with a thrilling ninth. Abreu led off the inning with a triple off closer Mark Worrell. Cory Dunlap grounded out to bring him home and pull the Dodgers within 5-3. Matt Kemp followed with a single to center and advanced to second a wild pitch. Ruggiano then smacked a base hit to right, brining home Kemp and making it a one-run game. Worrell then walked Edwin Bellorin, but got two fly outs to end the game.
Glenn Bott took the loss for the Dodgers in his Vero Beach debut. He struck out five hitters in four innings, but walked four. He allowed just two hits, but three runs scored. Matt Merricks threw three innings for the Dodgers and struck out five. He did not walk anyone, but gave up a 9th-inning leadoff home run to Mather that proved to be the game-winner.
