Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach) - Ryan Carter's 6th-inning grand slam tied the game and the Dodgers came back to beat Daytona 7-5 Friday night at Holman Stadium. Jimmy Rohan and Blake DeWitt each added two hits and two runs scored as the Dodgers evened the series. The rubber match is set for Saturday night at 7:00 PM with Chris Malone on the mound for Vero Beach. Vero's 6th-inning outburst came seemingly out of nowhere. Daytona starter Matt Weber allowed just one hit and no runs over his first five innings. Yet David Nicholson, Rohan and DeWitt all singled to start the 6th. A wild pitch scored Nicholson and Cole Bruce drew a walk to re-load the bases. Carter then blasted his grand slam off the scoreboard in left field to tie the game at five. The home run snapped an 0-15 mini-slump. The Dodgers took the lead in the 7th. Rohan and DeWitt began the inning with back-to-back singles. Angelo Burrows then dealt one wild pitch to score Rohan from third and then another to plate DeWitt all the way from second base. The Cubs had jumped on Vero Beach starter Matt Merricks. He blanked Daytona in the 1st to extend his scoreless inning streak to 12, but surrendered a 2-run homer to Jake Fox in the 2nd inning. Ryan Harvey added a 2-run shot in the 3rd to give his team a 4-0 lead. After Merricks walked two batters and hit another to load the bases in the 5th, he was lifted for reliever - and eventual winner - Albenis Castillo. Though the righthander gave up a sac fly to make it 5-0, CF Jamie Hoffman threw out Harvey trying to advance to third and that play ended the potential big inning. Castillo tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings to even his record at 1-1. Brian Akin threw a perfect 8th and Kyle Wilson retired all three batters in the 9th for his 2nd save.
