Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach) - Home runs from Travis Denker and Ryan Carter helped the Vero Beach Dodgers snap a season-opening three-game losing streak with a 6-0 decision Sunday night against St. Lucie. Brian Akin earned the win in relief with three scoreless innings. The Dodgers return to the road with a 7:05 start time in Jupiter Monday night. Chris Malone is scheduled to start for Vero Beach.
Carter's home run came with two outs in the second and put the Dodgers on top 1-0. During the next frame, Vero Beach would rap out four singles mixed with a walk to score three runs. Denker's blast was a 2-run shot in the fifth that capped the scoring.
Matt Merricks made the start for Vero Beach. Returning from a shoulder injury, Merricks threw four scoreless innings and stuck out seven Mets. He allowed only two hits and two walks.
Akin matched Merricks' mastery of the Mets lineup. St. Lucie managed only a single against Akin, who added four more K's. Kyle Wilson tossed the final two frames to preserve the win.
Every Dodger in the starting lineup had a hit. Carter, Denker and Blake DeWitt all finished with multiple hits. Denker drove in three and Carter two. Pat Borders scored twice.
