VB Dodgers and Chuck Tiffany Down Dunedin

July 16, 2005 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Chuck Tiffany threw a season-high seven innings to help the Dodgers defeat Dunedin 6-1 Saturday night at Holman Stadium. Tiffany allowed only two hits and one run, while striking out six and walking no one. Chin-lung Hu went 3-4 with two runs scored the Dodgers. The series continues Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 PM game at Holman Stadium.

Tiffany held the Blue Jays hitless until one out in the fifth when David Smith hit an opposite field home run to right-center. Dodgers right fielder Matt Kemp climbed the chain link fence and nearly kept the no-hitter intact, but the ball sailed just over his glove. Tiffany came back to strike out the next two hitters and allowed only one more baserunner.

Still, it took the Dodgers until the 6th to get on the board. Vero had failed to score in the first 14 innings of this series, but erupted for five runs, all coming in with two outs. Tony Abreu was hit by a pitch, Hu singled and Cole Bruce walked to load the bases. Then Jamie Hoffman bounced a ball past the pitcher's mound. Dunedin starter Kyle Yates fielded the ball but threw wildly to first, allowing two runs to score. Anthony Raglani, Edwin Bellorin and Xavier Paul all followed with RBI singles to make it 5-1 Dodgers.

Vero sealed in the 7th. Hu led off with a ground-rule double to left against reliever Jeremy Harper. He went to third on a Matt Kemp single and scored on Bruce's infield hit. Casey Hoorelbeke then threw the final two innings for the Dodgers, who even the series at a game a piece and the season series at three.
