Reno Aces News Release
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Reno Aces move to 7-0-6 in six-game slates this season after dropping the finale, 6-5, and splitting the series with the Sacramento River Cats on Tuesday evening.
Ildemaro Vargas became the first player in franchise history to record 100 doubles with his pair of two-baggers against the River Cats. The veteran infielder also extended his hit and run-scored streak to three games with his double in the first inning before crossing the plate for the Aces' first run two batters later.
With tonight's loss, Blake Lalli's club remains on pace to become the fastest team in franchise history to reach 50 wins and surpass the 2017 squad's 50-32 mark.
Seth Beer recorded his second multi-hit game in as many days and 19th of the season with his 2-for-4, one-RBI performance.
Reno jumped out to an early two-run lead in the opening frame. Following a one-out double by Vargas and Andrew Young getting plunked, Beer snapped a three-game RBI skid with a single to center, bringing the Aces' shortstop around to score, 1-0. After Henry Ramos reached on a fielder's choice that put runners on the corners, Young made a dash towards the plate on a wild pitch to give the visiting club a 2-0 edge.
Sacramento responded with a tally of its own in the home half of the first on a Joey Bart groundout to short that knocked in Brandon Belt and slashed the Aces' advantage in half, 2-1.
In the second frame, the River Cats took the lead, 4-2, on a Mauricio Dubon RBI single and a two-run base knock from Bryce Johnson.
Young registered his second run of the game on a double play in the third inning, pulling the Aces to within one run, 4-3.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, Reno put a pair of tallies on the board in the sixth. Following a leadoff single by Ramos and a free base-on-balls to Jake McCarthy, Nick Heath worked a one-out, 10-pitch walk to load the bases with one out. With nowhere to put him, Jose Herrera drove in a run on a walk of his own, tying the game at four. The Aces reclaimed the lead on a Cooper Hummel sacrifice fly to right, bringing McCarthy in from third for a 5-4 edge.
Reno's Zach Lee came on in relief in the home half of the sixth and tossed a near-perfect inning of action, surrendering just one hit and striking out three River Cats in just his second relief appearance of the season.
Following a blank top of the seventh from the visiting club, Aces' Matt Gage almost matched Lee's line in the bottom half, allowing one hit and punching out two in his frame of work.
Both teams were held off the board until Sacramento tagged Reno with a pair of tallies in the eighth on a two-run double by Jason Krizan, knocking off the Biggest Little City's team, 6-5.
The Aces will head home for a six-game slate against the Tacoma Rainiers, beginning on Thursday with first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m. PT. Thursday's contest can be heard on renoaces.com or locally on KPLY 630 AM with Zack Bayrouty on the call.
