Vanderbilt Grad Signs with Storm
The Storm have added another big man to their growing training camp roster.
Steve Tchiengang, a native of Cameroon, Africa, will be joining the Storm's training camp in mid-October, pending FIBA clearance.
The 6'9", 250 lbs Center was drafted by the Santa Cruz Warriors in the 5th round (77th overall) of the NBA D-League of last year's NBA D-League draft. After being released by the Warriors in November, Tchiengang was signed by Al Jaysh Army SC Doha in Qatar's 1st Division. With Doha, he averaged 6.3 points and 10.6 rebounds while shooting 55% from the floor.
Tchiengang played four years for Vanderbilt University, playing in 126 games. He averaged 3.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in his senior season, when the Commodores won the 2012 SEC Championship over eventual National Champions the Kentucky Wildcats and future NBA 1st overall pick Anthony Davis.
Storm Head Coach Joe Salerno says he's looking for Tchiengang to bolster the team's defense.
"Steve may have more upside than any player attending our training camp. He has great size at 6'9", 250 lbs, and a lot of mobility to go along with that. He played at an extremely high level for four years at Vanderbilt in the SEC, and just has a great feel for the game. He will be a big defensive presence for us in the paint this season, and someone who can also step out and stretch the floor for us. He is a great pickup for our team."
Tchiengang (pronounced CHEN-gang) also won 3 Texas State Class 4A Championships with Cypress Christian School between 2005-2007, before transferring to Montverde Academy High School in Texas for his 2007-2008 Senior Year. He averaged 14.9 points and 9.0 rebounds per game with Montverde. He was also a 3-time 1st Team All-State selection from 2004-2007.
Tchiengang has also played for the African Under-20 National Team in 2006, and was a member of the Cameroonian National Team in 2011.
The Storm open their training camp in mid-October, with an exhibition game at home (at UPEI) on Friday, October 25 vs the Saint John Mill Rats. The Storm will then travel for another pre-season contest versus the Halifax Rainmen on Sunday, October 27.
