INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis Indians right-handed starting pitcher Rick VandenHurk has been named the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 30-August 5. VandenHurk earned the award after a stellar week in which he went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA, 14 strikeouts and just three walks over 13.0 innings pitched.

In his first start of the week, on July 30 at Victory Field, the 27-year-old held the Buffalo Bisons to just a single run on seven hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings of work to earn the victory. The right hander then finished out the Indians roadtrip with a victory over Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on August 5 by allowing just two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings.

VandenHurk's back-to-back seven-punchout performances gave him four straight starts with at least seven strikeouts. With his recent strikeout surge, the veteran right hander has now collected the most punchouts (43) in the International League since July 1.

Overall, in 16 appearances (14 starts) this season, VandenHurk is 11-3 with a 3.34 ERA, 30 walks and 82 strikeouts over 91.2 innings pitched. His 11 victories are currently tied with four other pitchers for the most in the International league this season.

VandenHurk's honor is the fourth this season for a member of the Indians, joining starter Justin Wilson (April 23-29 and June 11-17) and outfielder Starling Marte (June 25-July 1). This also marks the second time in his career that the Eindhoven, Netherlands, native has garnered IL Pitcher of the Week honors, having also taken home the award from August 15-21, 2011, as a member of the Norfolk Tides.
