VanAsselberg, Hernandez Win Awards

Alexandria, LA; August 24, 2006 - Alexandria Aces manager Ricky VanAsselberg was named Co-Manager of the Year and righthander Santo Hernandez was named Co-Pitcher of the Year when United League Baseball announced its end-of-season awards Thursday.

VanAsselberg shared Manager of the Year honors with Edinburg's Vince Moore in the balloting of the league's six managers. Named to the post in May after originally signing on as an assistant coach, 32-year-old VanAsselberg has been a players' manager in his first season, leading the veteran club to the playoffs. A former Texas-Louisiana League champion in 1998, the Gardner, Louisiana resident even came out of retirement to play one game as an emergency replacement at catcher. Moore managed the Coyotes to a season-opening 17-game win streak and a first-place record of 57-33.

Hernandez and Edinburg righthander Ryan Harris were named Co-Pitchers of the Year. Acquired in the final week of preseason from the Pensacola Pelicans, the 22-year-old Hernandez has been Alexandria's most consistent starter this season and was recently named to start the opening game of the Aces' ULB semifinal series on Saturday. Hernandez finished the season 8-4 with a 3.94 ERA and 105 strikeouts, third-best in the league, in a team-high 121 innings pitched. Harris, a veteran of independent baseball, finished the season 10-6 with a 3.86 ERA.

San Angelo second baseman John Anderson was voted as the league's MVP. Anderson opened the season with an independent record 31-game hit streak and finished as the league's leading hitter with a .390 mark.
