San Angelo Colts second baseman John Anderson has been named the Most Valuable Player in the United League Baseball for the 2006 season.

Named Co-Managers of the Year were Ricky VanAsselberg of the Alexandria Aces and Vince Moore of the Edinburg Coyotes.

Also, named Co-Pitchers of the Year were Ryan Harris of the Coyotes, and Santos Hernandez of the Aces.

Anderson finished with a .390 batting average. He had been hitting above .400 until the last few games. His average at the July All-Star break was .368. He missed several games late in the season, but came back stronger than ever, than before his injury.

One of his big claims to fame was when he hit safely in the Colts first 31 games, breaking the independents leagues record.

He played in 63 games (through Monday).

VanAsselberg was hired as field manager after John Harris, former San Angelo field manger, hired by the Aces, but decided not to take the position, and Don Shwam also hired, but had to decline due to ill health.

Shwam later was released to manage by his doctor and became field manager of the Laredo Broncos.

Although a rookie manager, VanAsselberg quickly adapted and his ball club became one of the best in the league.

VanAsselberg played for the Texas-Louisiana Baseball League championship Aces in 1998 and also was with the Ozark Mountain Ducks in 2000 and was player-coach for that team in 2001. He was player-coach for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings in 2002.

VanAsselberg is a native of Louisiana and was an All-State baseball player and was named the MVP of the small college World Series while at Baptist Christian College of Louisiana.

Moore, a Houston native, is in his second year as field manager for Edinburg. He managed the Edinburg Roadrunners to the playoffs in 2005, then elected to stay with the Edinburg club in the same capacity in the new ULB.

His Edinburg Coyotes won their first 17 games before being defeated by San Angelo and stayed in first place the entire 2006 season.

He is a 15-year veteran of professional baseball. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 1991 Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves and spent two seasons with Class A Macon and a portion of the 1993 season in High Class A Durham of the Carolina League.

He began his career in independent baseball with the Greenville, Miss., Bluesmen in 1996 and moved to the Amarillo Dillas for the 1999 and 2000 seasons. He led the Dillas to the Texas-Louisiana League in 1999, batting .348. He joined the Roadrunners in 2001.

Harris, 32, has been with Edinburg for five years and has had outstanding seasons in all five. He finished with a 10-6 record and a 3.86 ERA for the Coyotes.

Hernandez, 22, started off hot for the Aces and has remained that way, The native of the Dominical Republic was signed by the Colorado Rockies, where he spent four years in their minor league system before being released.

For the Aces he has an ERA of 3.94 and an 8-4 record. His ERA mark is second only to Bric Steed (3.61), of Edinburg.
