Van Stralen Leads Thunder Past Mallards

March 7, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - Ryan Van Stralen scored two key second period goals as the host Wichita Thunder (31-23-6) defeated the Quad City Mallards (20-35-4) 4-1 Wednesday night.

Van Stralen broke a 1-1 deadlock on a partial breakaway at 9:05 of the second period and stretched the Thunder lead to 3-1 with another solo rush- this time on the power play- at 15:55 of the second.

In the third period, an unexpected bounce off the boards led directly to the fourth unanswered Wichita goal. The unfortunate Eric Hartzell (38 saves) was caught out of the Mallard crease and though he scrambled back in time to stop the Thunder's Mark MacMillan at close range, Ralph Cuddemi was on hand to bury the rebound at 11:52 of the third.

It was the Mallards who had first seized the initiative- while on the power play- when Matt Pohlkamp jumped on a rebound to give them a 1-0 lead at 6:22 of the first period. Kevin Dufour tied the game at one and started the Thunder turnaround by sweeping home a rebound at 13:21 of the first.

The Mallards before Wednesday night's game signed Ted Florence as an emergency backup goaltender.
