Vermont Mountaineers News Release
HOLYOKE, Mass. - A dominant night at the plate for the Valley Blue Sox doomed the Vermont Mountaineers, who fell to the two-time defending league champs, 11-4, on Thursday night at McKenzie Stadium in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Blue Sox struck first in the opening inning when the Mountaineers could not capitalize on having two outs, as Travis Holt drove one to bring Joe Lomuscio home for the first score. Vermont responded with a run of their own in the third, after Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) made his way to second on a double off the right field fence. Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook University) got him home, getting a single on two outs to finish the job and even the score.
The Valley offense erupted for five-straight innings, tallying at least one run in each frame. A two RBI double by Michael Wroth in the bottom of the third broke the deadlock, before the home team added another run in the following inning on a Carter Williams single that allowed JP Walsh to score. The Mountaineers attempted to mount a comeback in the ensuing frame, getting a run by Giordano courtesy of a Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) double. The Blue Sox immediately shut down their hopes, however, recording seven runs over the next three frames. Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) tried to make some noise in the final opportunity, smashing his first home run of the season with Ciaran Devenney (Manalapan, N.J. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) on base, but the Mountaineers could not amass anything more as Valley ran away with the 11-4 victory.
Tyler Thorington (Woodhaven, Mich. / Western Michigan University) took the loss for Vermont, giving up nine hits and four runs in his four innings of play. Tyler Hankins earned the win, allowing just three hits and one run in under four frames.
The loss drops the Mountaineers to 15-13, as the team will now return home for two straight nights. The homestand will begin with a cross-divisional showdown against the New Bedford Bay Sox tomorrow, Jul. 12, with opening pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
