Yakima Bears News Release
YAKIMA, WA - Cesar Valdez did something only five other pitchers in team history had ever done, pitching a complete game to beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-1.
Valdez (4-3) collected the win, throwing all nine innings while, allowing just six hits and one earned run. Valdez struck out eight men, including Henry Gutierrez to end the ballgame. The victory is the fourth in a row for Valdez, the reigning Northwest League Pitcher of the Week.
The Bears struck first in this ballgame in the first inning, as Travis Tully led off with a single that was followed by a Joey Side double to put Bears at second and third. Brad Miller brought home Tully with a sacrifice fly to left to make it 1-0.
The Volcanoes responded with a run in the second when Henry Gutierrez tripled and cam home on a bounce out to tie the game.
In the third, it was the same trio of Tully, Side, and Miller who gave the Bears the lead for good. Tully again singled, as did Side. A throwing error on Side's single moved Tully to third, and Miller again contributed a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Bears added two more runs off of reliever Steven Calicutt. The first coming in the sixth, when Blake Sharpe drove in Connor Janes with a single. Janes was on the other side of the scoring play, driving in Jason Watson in the seventh. The RBI single accounting for the game's final run.
The loss spoiled the 21st birthday of Volcanoes starter Ben Snyder (1-1).
The two teams close out this five game series tomorrow night at 7:05, with RHP Eric Butler on the hill for the Bears and RHP Gib Hobson getting the ball for the Volcanoes.
