Utah Blaze News Release

NASHVILLE (Sept. 26, 2005) - The Utah Blaze selected quarterback Adrian McPherson in the 13th round of the 2006 Arena Football League Expansion Draft on Monday. McPherson, who was the AFL's 2004 Rookie of the Year, was on the Nashville Kats' exempt roster before being selected by the Blaze. He was a third-round draft choice of the New Orleans Saints last April, and he is currently on the Saints' roster.

McPherson was the only Kats player to have been selected. Nashville had eight players available in the draft, including Fred Coleman, the team's leading receiver in 2005, and Dan Alexander, an '05 All-Rookie selection at fullback/linebacker. McPherson did not play in the AFL at all last season, and is not likely to play in the league again any time soon.

Utah, as the league's lone expansion entry for 2006, had 20 selections in the draft and used them all. Each of the remaining 17 teams could pull one of their exposed players back after losing a player. The Kats pulled back Coleman when McPherson was selected.

The Blaze selected Austin Wranglers DS Kelvin Hunter with their first pick, followed by linemen Fred Ray (Los Angeles Avengers), Tim McGill (New York Dragons) and Scott Pospisil (Chicago Rush).

The expansion draft kicked off what is sure to be a busy few weeks around the AFL, as the league's free agent signing period begins on Saturday. There are 200 AFL players eligible for free agency this year, including 13 members of the 2005 Kats.
