LAST WEEK:
LATE TOUCHDOWN LIFTS BLAZE OVER RATTLERS
Record Night For Dennard Gives Utah First Victory Over Arizona
PHOENIX - On a record-setting night, WR/LB RYAN DENNARD lifted the Utah Blaze (2-0) to a 75-71 victory over the rival Arizona Rattlers (0-2) in front of 9,594 fans at the U.S. Airways Center. The victory gives the Blaze sole possession of first place in the Western Division.
"This wasn't getting just a monkey off our backs, it was more like the size of a gorilla," said Blaze head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE on his first victory against his former team. "Our guys gutted it out in the second half. It really shows the type of heart that our guys have. I am proud of this team."
The Blaze offense was led by Offensive Player of the Game, QB JOE GERMAINE, who completed 34-of-48 passes for 433 yards, 10 touchdowns and one interception, while adding one rushing touchdown. Ironman of the Game honors went to Dennard, who set personal bests with 16 receptions for 181 yards and a team-record seven touchdowns. The former Arizona State standout, who added two solo tackles and four assists on defense, is a leading contender for the League's weekly honor - an award that he won in Week 1.
The Rattlers led 20-13 after the first quarter, thanks to three touchdown passes from QB SHERDRICK BONNER to WR JEREMIAH POPE and WR TRANDON HARVEY. But the theme of the game for the Rattlers was missed extra points. Rattlers K GARY KRAL missed five extra points in the game.
For Utah, who were without the services of receivers SIAHA BURLEY and AARON BOONE due to injuries, Dennard stepped up and collected three first half touchdowns. The last coming with 11 seconds remaining in half, but the Blaze still trailed 39-27 at the half.
The second half storyline was perfection from Germaine. The former Ohio State star was a perfect 21-of-21 passing for 276 yards and six touchdowns in the second half. But Utah still trailed 52-48 after three quarters.
The key play in the game came with the 43 seconds remaining in the game and the Blaze trailing 71-69. Blaze K STEVE VIDETICH's onsides kick was recovered by rookie LB VALENTINE CHUDE. This allowed Germaine to hook up with WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT on a 23-yard scoring strike with 13 seconds remaining and give the Blaze the four-point lead.
The Utah defense held Bonner in check as his pass to Pope was completed to the three-yard line, but Lawson made the tackle at the final horn. Arizona's JOSEPH TODD was named defensive player of the game with 7.5 tackles and an interception.
THE IFS...:
If the Blaze defeat Nashville . . .
*Give Utah a 2-0 record versus Nashville.
*Give Utah a 3-0 record for the 2007 season.
*Give Utah a 10-9 all-time regular-season record.
*Give Utah a 2-0 record on the road in 2007.
THE COACHES:
Utah - Danny White, 15th season
130-64 (.670) reg. season; 150-75 (.670) overall
1-0 career vs. Nashville
During his 15th season as an AFL head coach and second with the Blaze, White has compiled a record of 150-75 and advanced to the AFL Playoffs in 12 of the previous 13 years (hasn't missed the postseason since 1992). Prior to joining the Blaze, White was the head coach of the Arizona Rattlers for 13 seasons (1992-2004). The AFL Hall of Fame coach has two titles (1994 and 1997) to his credit and has made five ArenaBowl appearances (1994, 97, 2002-04). During his last season in Arizona in 2004, White compiled a 13-6 record and made his third straight ArenaBowl appearance. White won AFL "Coach of the Year" award in 1993 and officially became the head coach of the Blaze on April 21, 2005. White guided the Blaze to a 7-9 regular season record during the Blaze's inaugural season. The Blaze also made the postseason before falling to the rival Arizona Rattlers in 2006.
Nashville - Pat Sperduto, 6th season
46-27 (.630) reg. season; 51-31 (.622) overall
0-1 career vs. Utah
Pat Sperduto enters his sixth season as Head Coach of the Nashville Kats and his eighth season overall with the club, having already put together one of arena football's most impressive coaching careers. Sperduto has compiled a 46-27-1 regular season record and a post season record of 5-4 throughout his five seasons as head coach, leading his club to consecutive appearances in ArenaBowl XIV and XV. His teams have ranked in the top 10 in scoring offense, scoring defense and rush defense each year and have qualified for the AFL playoffs four out of five head coaching seasons under Sperduto.

LAST MEETING:
DEFENSE FUELS BLAZE BLOWOUT, 63-34
Seven Turnovers, Unique Game Plan Keys First Home Win
SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Blaze (3-4) finally broke through and posted a home victory when they handed the Nashville Kats (4-3) a 63-34 loss at the EnergySolutions Arena in front of 14,052 fans to remain in first place in the Western Division.
"This was a great shot in the arm for us," said head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE. "We beat a good team tonight, and to beat them in that fashion is a real confidence builder for us. It was the complete game we have been looking for all year."
The Blaze came into the game with one of the best offenses in the league, but used a unique blend of rushing, screen passes and quick slants to keep the Nashville defense on their heels.
Offensive Player of the Game, FB/LB CHRIS ROBINSON, led the team with six carries for 19 yards and two touchdowns. Ironman of the Game WR/DB ORSHAWANTE BRYANT led the receiving corps with three catches for 58 yards, a touchdown pass off a screen and an interception off the wall. ADT Defensive Player of the Game OL/DL BRYAN HENDERSON finished with a sack, a tackle for a loss, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble.
In fact, two of the teams five receiving touchdowns came from offensive linemen as OL/DL JOHN CULP recorded his first receiving touchdown in a Blaze uniform, while Henderson added the other.
The Blaze game out hot as FB/LB KEVIN CLEMENS started the scoring with two one-yard plunges before the Kats first snap. Clemens scored on Utah's first possession and the ensuing kickoff bounced off the goal post into the WR/LB TOM PACE's hands and scored again for a quick 14-0 lead they would never relinquish.
AFL Offensive Player of the Month for February SIAHA BURLEY was held to just four catches for 40 yards and only one touchdown.
"If they want to lose and stop me from scoring, I will take it every time," Burley said. "I can't sleep when we lose. I had six touchdowns against New York and I couldn't sleep because we lost."
Utah QB JOE GERMAINE finished 14-of-20 passing for 160 yards with two touchdowns before being relieved by JASON GESSER, who finished 4-of-7 passing for 32 yards and two touchdowns.
STORYLINES & FUN FACTS:
UTAH'S DENNARD EARNS WEEKLY HONOR AGAIN
Veteran Recognized For His Two-Way Play For Second Straight Week
SALT LAKE CITY - The Arena Football League Office announced Utah Blaze WR/LB RYAN DENNARD (6-3, 227, Arizona State) as Ironman of the Week for Week 2. This marks the second straight week the former Sun Devil has earned an AFL weekly award.

"We really needed Ryan to step up this week due to the injuries to (Siaha) Burley and (Aaron) Boone - and he did," said Blaze head coach/general manager DANNY WHITE. "He took advantage of the opportunity and showed the kind of talent he possesses. I am really excited for Ryan because he's worked hard to get where he is."
