Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Wednesday, June 7, 2006) - USL Second Division leaders Richmond Kickers (5-1-2, 17 points) and defending champions Charlotte Eagles (4-1-3, 15 points) face off at the University of Richmond Stadium this Saturday, June 10th at 7:00 p.m. The first 1,000 fans through the gate will receive a free World Cup tournament poster courtesy of Piccola Italy, Bandito's Burrito Lounge and Buffalo Wild Wings. The first 500 Pro Pass holders through the gate will receive free admission as well as an advanced release of the 2006 Richmond Kickers team poster.
Only two points out of first place, the Eagles look to even the score against the Kickers who delivered their only loss of the season in Charlotte on May 12th. League-leading Richmond collected four points on a weekend road trip with a 1-1 draw in Pittsburgh and a 1-0 win in Cincinnati while Charlotte took a 1-0 win over the New Hampshire Phantoms at home last week. The Kickers last hosted the Charlotte Eagles on August 30, 2003 with a 6-2 win in Richmond.
Kickers And Eagles Join Forces To Benefit The Children of Northern Uganda
Kickers defender Kevin Knight and Eagles forward Dustin Swinehart spent time in Uganda and Rwanda during the off-season. Their experiences have prompted a clothing and equipment drive for the children in need, specifically Northern Uganda. You will also have an opportunity to donate new and gently used clothing, blankets, and soccer equipment for the children in Gulu, Uganda at the Kickers vs. Charlotte Eagles match this Saturday, June 10th.
Tim Brown Update
Kickers midfielder Tim Brown earned his eighth international cap after starting and playing 61 minutes of New Zealand's 2-0 loss to Hungary in Budapest on May 24th and picking up 24 minutes against Brazil on June 4th. Brown just finished a 17-day European tour with the New Zealand National Team which included official FIFA "A" internationals against Hungary (May 24), Georgia (May 27), Estonia (May 31) and Brazil (June 4). A pulled hamstring sidelined Brown as he was unavailable for selection for the 3-1 win in Georgia and the 1-1 draw in Estonia last week but recovered in time for the highlight of the All-Whites tour, the June 4th match up against World Cup favorites Brazil. Coming on in the 66th minute, Brown whistled a header off the crossbar during the 4-0 loss. He is expected back in the Kickers starting lineup in time for the next home game, Saturday, June 10th versus Charlotte.
Players To Watch
Kickers: Tim Brown (#15) returns to anchor the midfield, fresh off the 17-day European tour with the New Zealand National Team. Midfielder Mike Burke (#19) tallied his second game-winner of the season during the 1-0 win in Cincinnati last weekend. Now tied for second in scoring on the team and third in the league, Burke earned Team of the Week honors this week for his efforts. Leading the Kickers and the league, forward Robert Ssejjemba (#14) recently tallied his sixth goal of the campaign in the 1-1 draw in Pittsburgh (6 goals, 2 assists, 14 points overall). Defender Kelvin Jones (#5) garnered Team of the Week honors for the second consecutive week for his consistent solid play allowing goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale (#22) to post his fourth shutout of the season over the Kings on the road.
Eagles: Charlotte boasts an impressive roster with several returning MVP's from last year's Champion squad including USL2 Goalkeeper of the Year Chris McClellan (#0), Defender of the Year Josh Rife (#11) as well as Scoring Champion, Goal Scoring Champion and USL2 Most Valuable Player Jacob Coggins (#20). Coggins is currently co-leading scorer for the Eagles, sharing the title with teammate Patrick Daka (#19) (2 goals, 1 assist, 5 points) who earned Team of the Week honors for registering the game-winner in the 1-0 win over New Hampshire last weekend. Forward Dustin Swinehart (#18) made eight appearances on loan with the Kickers First Division Finalists team last season and tallied one assist for Richmond. Currently he is second on the team in scoring with one goal and two assists for four points.
