USL announces Week 12 honors
July 6, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) News Release
TAMPA, FL â United Soccer Leagues announced the Teams of the Week for Week 12 today, honoring Edmonton's Sean Fraser, New Hampshire's Mark Manganello, Cape Cod's David Bulow and Long Island's Michelle O'Brien as the Players of the Week in the A-League, Pro Soccer League, Premier Development League and W-League.
The Edmonton Aviators won their second game in a row this weekend after going winless in their first ten. With Edmonton down 2-0 in Vancouver, midfielder Sean Fraser figured in all three of the Aviators goals as the Aviators rallied to a 3-2 win over the first-place Whitecaps Sunday.
Fraser's first goal was scored in the waning seconds of the first half when Nikki Vignjevic broke Fraser free to go one-on-one with Whitecaps goalkeeper Alex Marques. Fraser got to the ball first and rolled it into the empty net.
In the 52nd minute, Fraser flicked a ball on to Freddy Akok who was able to chip Marques to tie the game at 2-2. Putting the finishing touch on the comeback, Fraser controlled a Gordon Chin cross in the 89th minute and blasted it into the back of the net from eight yards out.
Fraser started 28 games for the Team Calgary franchise last season and has appeared in every match for the Aviators so far in 2004. The points were his first of the season and make him the leading scorer for Edmonton, which has struggled offensively with only eight goals in 12 games.
New Hampshire sits squarely atop the PSL's Northern Division, thanks in part to Mark Manganello, who recorded two goals and an assist Friday against the Charlotte Eagles, the Southern Division leader.
In the 67th minute, Manganello's pass behind the Eagles defense sprung Bjorn Hansen to knot the score at 1-1. He then recorded two unassisted goals in the 78th and 84th minutes to lead his team to victory. Both tallies came on superb individual efforts, weaving through Charlotte's defenders.
A nine-year veteran of the PSL, Manganello has amassed 66 goals and 35 assists during stints with the Rhode Island Stingrays, Western Mass Pioneers and now the Phantoms.
The two-time defending PDL champion Cape Cod Crusaders sit outside the playoff picture in third. While trying to chase down second-place Albany, the Crusaders had to fend off the fourth-place Reading Rage Friday, and with a stellar outing from forward David Bulow, the Crusaders left Reading 4-3 winners in overtime.
Tied at 1-1, Bulow gave Cape Cod the lead in the 34th minute on an assist from Keith Caldwell only to see Reading take the game into the break 2-2 on a 40th minute penalty kick from Eric Parrish. In the second half, Bulow struck unassisted in the 82nd minute and just when it looked like it would stand as the winner, Reading's Jeff Koegel found the back of the net in the 89th to send the game to overtime. Three minutes away from a draw Bulow tallied the game-winner unassisted to complete his hat-trick and give Cape Cod the win.
Bulow leads the team in scoring with 11 goals, which ranks eighth in the league. Last season, he finished fifth in the league in points (33) and fourth in goals (15) as he led the Crusaders to their second straight title with an additional six goals and an assist in the postseason.
In a rematch of a 3-2 overtime loss at home the week before, the Long Island Lady Riders returned the favor against the New Jersey Lady Stallions Saturday with a 5-3 victory. Forward Michelle O'Brien stole the show, factoring in four of Long Island's five tallies.
Four minutes into the match O'Brien opened the scoring on an unassisted goal and then pushed the lead to 2-0 by setting up Kerri McCabe in the 16th minute. The Lady Stallions pulled back within one on a Tatiana Mathelier goal in the 39th, but O'Brien scored again in the 44th to take a 3-1 lead to halftime. Mathelier scored again in the 53rd to get back within one again only to see O'Brien find McCabe for a second time two minutes later for what proved to be the game-winner.
In her fourth season with the club, O'Brien is the leading scorer on the team with five goals and five assists for 15 points. She has 15 goals and 10 assists in her four years with the Lady Riders.
